British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
